SERDANG, Jan 29 – Minister of Primary Industries, Teresa Kok Suh Sim launched a new book by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) titled ‘Mengupas Prestasi Usahawan Bumiputera Dalam Sektor Perabot’ (Analysing Bumiputra Entrepreneurs’ Performance in the Furniture Sector).
The book, jointly published by UPM and the Association of Malaysian Bumiputra Timber and Furniture Entrepreneurs (PEKA), marks the beginning of more intensive activities especially for Bumiputra entrepreneur development in the furniture sector.
The book is based on a research by Prof. Dr. Jegatheswaran, a lecturer from the Faculty of Forestry, UPM who is an expert in the furniture industry and recognised locally and internationally.
Teresa Kok said that PEKA and timber industry in general, will gain a lot of benefits through this smart partnership.
This industry has a high impact on the development of Bumiputra entrepreneurs in the sector.
The timber industry is one of the important socioeconomic sectors for the country. In 2017, timber product export value was estimated to reach RM23.2 billion while the export of furniture products recorded a value of RM10.1 billion.
The published research will act as a reference for timber industry policy makers, entrepreneurs and students as they can refer to the book for an in-depth report, use it as a benchmark and adopt the suggestions given to further improve the development of Bumiputra entrepreneurs in the sector. - UPM
