MELAKA, 15 March – The Centre for the Advancement of Language Competence (CALC), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organised “The 1st International Asean English Language Teaching Conference 2018” (ASEAN-ELT 2018) to provide a platform for school teachers and educators to share ideas regarding the teaching and learning of the English language.

UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dato’ Dr. Aini Ideris said the conference aimed to help educators who are teaching the English language from the preschool level up to the tertiary level.

“I hope this conference will serve as an eye-opener in English language teaching and learning as participants share best practices that can be implemented in teaching,” she said.

She added that through the conference, UPM realised that educators need input from the experts, knowledge of best practices for classroom teaching and ideas from those with a background in Performing Arts to make teaching more creative.

“ASEAN-ELT 2018 also involves teachers who are viewed as role models in their community as well as individuals from other fields who have teaching ideas that are more creative,” she said.

Chairman of ASEAN-ELT 2018 Conference, Prof. Dr. Jayakaran Mukundan said the conference with a theme ‘Maximizing the Potential in ASEAN Diversities through English’ has gathered well-known speakers of various genres in the English language teaching from all over the world.

“This provides opportunities for participants to build a network while sharing the expertise to produce materials for English language teaching and learning that can be used for the benefit of all ASEAN members,” he said.

ASEAN-ELT 2018 assembled world renowned speakers in English language teaching. Among them were Prof. Alan Maley; Mr. Breis, a hip hop lyricist; Jan Blake, winner of storyteller from the United Kingdom; Prof. Carolyn Graham who is the founder of Jazz Chant from the United States of America; Prof. Jack C. Richards; and Prof. Rod Ellis from New Zealand. - UPM
