By: Dr. Nur Mahiza Md Isa

KINARUT (Sabah), Aug 3 – Lecturers from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) shared their knowledge with the staff of Sabah Department of Veterinary Services (JPVS) at the Herd Health Programme and Liver Fluke seminars and ‘Hands-on Basic Veterinary Parasitology Diagnosis' workshop at Sabah Meat Technology Centre (SMTC) here.

The programme received an encouraging participation with 38 participants involving JPVS personnel from Beaufort as well as personnel from Veterinary Public Health Laboratory and Sabah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

SMTC manager, Kadir Umar, said the programme was beneficial to the staff involved as it provided exposure and sharing of experiences on the approach to implement group health programmes and the latest diagnostic techniques.

Head of the programme who is also a Parasitologist, Dr. Nur Mahiza Md Isa, said the programme received an overwhelming response from JPVS staff who were proactive in enhancing their knowledge in the field of ruminant livestock.

One of the topics discussed was 'The Importance of Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS) Vaccine’, an approach in vaccination and management of liver worm disease in ruminant animals. Participants also learned the basic knowledge in parasite diagnosis such as stools and blood diagnoses. An expert in ruminant animal production from UPM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lokman Hakim Idris, said the programme was a knowledge transfer programme which comprised teaching, learning, research and services that could enhance the quality of human capital.

A participant of the seminar and workshop, Ahlun Kanak, said the programme allowed the staff to obtain the latest information on worms, especially liver worms.

When officiating the programme, JPVS Senior Assistant Director of Research, Dr. Hajjah Normah, expressed her hope that the programme would be continued and expanded to other districts in Sabah.

She said it would help in identifying the problems faced by breeders in Sabah, and that academics from UPM could recommend suitable solutions to the problems.

"This programme enhances community engagement between the community and the academics," she said.

The programme was conducted in conjunction with UPM-JPVS joint research venture on Fascioliasis or worm liver disease on Sabah ruminant livestock in the district of Papar and its surrounding areas such as Kuala Penyu and the district of Beaufort. The research was to determine the extent of liver worm infection in ruminant livestock such as cattle, buffaloes, goats and sheep in Sabah.

The six-day research began on July 29 and ended on August 3, 2019 and involved four key activities, namely sampling, seminars, workshops and sample analysis. A total of 42 JPVS officers, three UPM students and two UMS students participated in the collaborative programme. - UPM
