Malay Cultural Heritage Event brings students closer towards Malay culture

SERDANG, Dec 3 - An estimated 600 Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) students involved in 15 credited co-curricular courses such as 'Batik Canting' , 'Caklempong' , Stage Management, Malay Cultural Dance, 'Kompang Music, 'Bakti Siswa', Basic Vocals and 'Gordang Sembilan' participated in the Malay Cultural Heritage Event 2017.

More than 100 students had hands-on experience in the batik-making process including 30 international students from countries such as South Korea, Syria, Pakistan, Egypt, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Jordan, Somalia and Saudi Arabia. They also participated in a heritage sports event included in the programme to better familiarise with the Malay culture.

The two-day programme at the UPM Heritage Museum is aimed at promoting and empowering the heritage of the Malay community. The programme was also grand and vibrant with stalls, a cultural song singing competition and exhibitions.

President of the Pertubuhan Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (DMDI), Tan Sri Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam when closing the programme, praised the involvement of the international students in the programme as the country's cultural heritage is now known by people from outside of Malaysia.

He also hoped the programme would be an annual event.

Also present at the closing ceremony were the Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication UPM, Prof. Dr. Abdul Mua'ti @ Zamri Ahmad; Chairman of the Board of Principals for UPM Residential Colleges, Prof. Dr. Sidek Abdul Aziz representing the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs & Alumni, as well as the Director of Student Co-Curriculum and Development Centre, Prof. Madya Dr. M. Paramasivam.
