TASIK CHINI – A total of 44 students from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) have carried out a "Let's Listen to Nature 4.0" programme with the theme of "Nature is the Art of God" and joined by 44 children from the Orang Asli community from the cluster school of excellence, SK Chini Lake, Pahang recently.

The programme was organised by the Biology Student Club (KMB-FASSA), Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, UPM in collaboration with the Youth Empowerment Centre (PERKASA), Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, UKM and Tasik Chini Research Centre (PPTC), UKM, Pahang.

The programme with the theme of "Nature is the Art of God" emphasised on the transfer of biology knowledge to children from the Orang Asli community consisting of Year 4 to 6 pupils from Sekolah Kebangsaan Tasik Chini through the activity entitled "Explorace: Biology Is Life, Biology Is Us!".

Each group of pupils must complete nine activities to enable them to move on to the deciding round, where all the groups will come together to carry out the final activity simultaneously.

Among the activities carried out were "Keep On Track", "Giant Bingo", "Talking Stick" and "Guess It Out", while the activity for the final deciding round was "Nature Got Help". Each activity was filled with biology knowledge such as animal characteristics, effects of plastic use on the environment, and an emphasis on the 3R concepts (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle).

Programme and KMB advisor, Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir, said the programme not only succeeded in attracting the interest of pupils from the Orang Asli community to understand biology knowledge, but it also provided exposure on the importance of environmental preservation and conservation through current environmental issues.

Meanwhile, programme and KMB advisor, Dr. Bokhary Zainal, said UPM students were able to learn appropriate ways of delivering information to the Orang Asli pupils from SK Tasik Chini by thinking more creatively in planning each activity to be conducted so that the information presented is easy to understand and apply.

The programme also received sponsorship and support from the Faculty of Science, UPM and donations from individuals and companies such as Raspberry Ribbons, Techouz, Malaysian Youth Community (MYC) and MafixWorld.

The programme was held in collaboration with SK Tasik Chini Pahang, the Youth Empowerment Centre (PERKASA), UKM and Tasik Chini Research Centre, UKM, Pekan, Pahang.

A research officer from the Tasik Chini Research Centre, Nur Amelia Abas, said the programme objectives were achieved through the environmental-themed game activities.

“Through these activities, much emphasis has been placed on conservation. This proves that one of the programme objectives has been achieved,” she said.

Programme director, Muhammad Afiq Mohd Zaidi, hoped that programme such as this would be continued in the future to expose more students to biology knowledge.

“If there is an opportunity to join a programme like this again, take it. Besides feeling satisfied for being able to share some biology knowledge with the community, we can also train ourselves to think creatively and critically in developing strategies and solving problems which may occur before and during the programme,” he said. - UPM
