Tan Sri Prof. Emeritus Anuwar Ali appointed as Chairman of UPM Board of Directors

SERDANG, 1 August - Tan Sri Prof. Emeritus Anuwar Ali has been appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) effective 1 August 2017 until 31 July 2020.

 His appointment was endorsed by the Minister of Higher Education in a letter signed by the Director General of Higher Education in the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Higher Education, Datin Paduka Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah Tapsir.

 Tan Sri Anuwar is replacing the former Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Prof. Emeritus Dr. Syed Jalaluddin Syed Salim whose service tenure ended on 31 July 2017. Tan Sri Syed Jalaluddin had held the post as the Chairman of UPM Board of Director for 4 years since 2013.

Tan Sri Anuwar is currently the Senior Advisor at Open University Malaysia (OUM) since his appointment on 1 January 2016 after servicing OUM as the President/Vice Chancellor for 12 years.

The Vice Chancellor of UPM, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris, said that UPM staff and students welcome the appointment and have full confidence that Tan Sri Anuwar is capable of providing the best service to maintain UPM’s excellence at the national and international arena.

“On behalf of the university, we would also like to express our appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to Tan Sri Syed Jalaluddin who has greatly contributed his efforts and profound ideas for the excellence of UPM that we have enjoyed so far,” said Prof. Aini.

Tan Sri Anuwar began his career in 1973 as a tutor at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He has established himself not only as an economist (in the field of industrial planning and human resource development) but also as an academic leader.

He was the first academician appointed as the Director of the Higher Education Division at the Ministry of Education from 1996 until 1998. Prior to this appointment, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, UKM before being appointed as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at the university.

 

Before joining UKM, Tan Sri Anuwar was the Assistant Director at the Ministry of Trade and Industry from 1970 until 1973.

Among the positions he is currently holding include Chairman of the Advisory Panel of the Malaysian Institute of Economics Research (MIER), Member of the National Lifelong Learning Committee, Member of the National Minimum Wage Council, Chairman of the National Wage Negotiation Technical Committee and Member of the National Higher Education Council.

He also had the experience of being the Chairman of the Southeast Asian Open Learning Centre (SEAMOLEC) based in  Jakarta; Member of the Griffith Asia Pacific Council (GAPC), Griffith University, Australia; Board Member of the Association of Southeast Asian Institute of Higher Learning (ASAIHL); Chairman of the Malaysian Examination Council; Board Member of Bank Pembangunan Malaysia (Malaysia Development Bank); Member of the Securities Commission Malaysia; Board Member of INTI University College and International Medical University (IMU); Board Member of SIRIM Training Services Sdn Bhd; Board Member of Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF); Visiting Fellow of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS), Malaysia; and Executive Committee Member of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU).

He was appointed as Economic Consultant for several national and international projects including UNIDO Consultant for the Industrial Master Plan, Malaysia (1986-1995); UNIDO Consultant  for  the Industrial Development in Bhutan (1990-1991);  Consultant  for the Action Plan for Technological Development, Malaysia and Consultant for/to the    Action Plan for Small and Medium Scale Industries, Malaysia.
