UPM attends ASAIHL 2017 conference at Universitas Hasanuddin, Makassar

MAKASSAR, May 17 - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) took part in the four-day conference of The Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) 2017 which was held from May 16 to 19 at Universitas Hasanuddin, Makassar in Indonesia.

The conference, themed Higher Education Challenges in Shaping The Nation Competitiveness, was opened by Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education, Prof. Dr. H Mohamad Nasir.

Prof. Dr. Nasir urged ASAIHL to not only act as a forum for discussion but also to strengthen mutual understanding in bringing the higher education sector to higher grounds.

"Higher education is the hallmark of individual competency, social progress and cultural development. Through education, we find our place in the world, understand the world and respect each other, "he said.

Universitas Hasanuddin Rector, Prof. Dr. Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu pointed out that in line with the expectation of society on the role of higher education institutions (HEI) to improve the aspect of accountability, it was only right that strong impetus be given to universities to develop a better system of governance.

Among key personalities who gave their keynote address were Prof. Jun Murai who is formerly Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, Keio University, Japan, Professor Cheng Kai-Ming who is Chair Professor of Education at the University of Hong Kong and Gita Wirjawan, member of the Board of Trustees of Universitas Hasanuddin, who also is a successful entrepreneur and former Indonesian Minister of Trade and Industry. Also present was Dr. Ninnat Olanvoravuth who is ASAIHL honorary secretary.

At this conference, UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Aini Ideris, also attended the meeting of the Board of Trustees of ASAIHL to discuss the direction and educational issues, including ASAIHL Fellowship programme.

UPM gave given its commitment to send its staff to Naresuan University, Thailand, under the AirAsia ASAIHL Fellowship Programme which involved the exchange of officials between the two universities for a minimum period of one week to boost academic cooperation.

The Fellowship programme marked the first ever to have been offered by AirAsia to ASAIHL where UPM-Naresuan University were chosen as the first recipients of the scheme.

UPM delegation comprised Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato 'Syed Jalaluddin Syed Salim who is UPM Chairman of the Board of Directors, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris, Professor Dr.-Ing. Ir. Renuganth Varaharajoo who is UPM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Community Relations) and Mohd Nazri Md Yasin, Head of UPM Division of Administration in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.

ASAIHL, established in 1956, is a non-governmental organization to strengthen the role and contribution of universities in Southeast Asia.
