SERDANG, July 9 (UPM) - A team of researchers from Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FSKTM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has successfully conducted a research in developing a system that helps to facilitate and accelerate the existing process of diagnosis and surgery, known as 'Computer Assisted Surgery and Diagnosis’ (CASD).

The database system also helps data experts to process medical images according to the needs of medical specialists in surgical decision making. In addition, the data visualization in 3D format, will incorporate the smart techniques in enhancing the diagnosis, as well as assisting training simulations.

The Head of the Research Team, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rahmita Wirza Rahmat said, CASD allows doctors to evaluate all information as well as reports of a patient before giving any appropriate treatment to the respective patient.

"CASD works to collect and update patients’ data, also used as secondary data and will then be stored in a special database”.

"With a software that sorts things in orderly fashion, it facilitates the work of a doctor during treatment of a patient”.

"CASD also mitigates the burden of nurses by making the process of digitally storing information of patients, much easier and accurate”.

"Besides that, the system also facilitates junior medical specialists in conducting their studies on patients without bearing the risk of overlapping the data," she said.

Elaborating further on the CASD project, Dr. Rahmita stated it consists of three phases, beginning with the Cardiothoracic Surgery and Diagnosis by developing a comprehensive Application Database system to replace the shortcomings in the existing database.

This system provides the necessary data to process medical images (angiography and echocardiography) in accordance with the requirements of the user.

The second phase is to visualize the data, either in text format or in 3D multimedia visualization with voice interaction and hand movement.

The third phase will incorporate the smart techniques to improve the diagnostic capabilities and simulation exercises using the extracted data from the database.

"The CASD Project with the 3 Dimensional (3D) concept also combines the entire clinical patient management including admission to ward, operating theatre and Coronary Intensive Care Unit," she added.

The findings of this project were derived from the collaborations with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center (PPUKM) and National Heart Institute (IJN), involving 18 computer science and health science lecturers.

With regards to the collaborations, more researches and incentives can be implemented, thus, this will contribute significantly to the advancement of the nation.

The cost estimate of  this research and software processing involving the sum of RM500,000, in which, each sub-component is sold between RM10,000 to RM50,000, depending on the function of each sub-component.

The system has been initially developed in 2006 and received a recognition at the 24th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition Award (ITEX 2013) in May, and it will be in the market by the end the year, featuring  sophisticated criterias including visual information display, smart reporting and effective warning system.

The extensive use of CASD software in hospitals will reduce the number of cardiothoracic patients, besides allowing doctors to constantly monitor the patients’ condition despite being outside of the hospital area. – UPM
