By Dr. Hizmawati Madzin

CYBERJAYA - A group of Bachelor in Computer Science (Software Engineering) students of Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty recently won two awards at the MIT Global Startup Lab (MIT GSL Malaysia) 2015.

The group comprising Anas Hasbullah, Daeng Bukhari, Abdul Ammar Rusydi and Mohd Sharafat Shah walked away with the ‘Audience Choice Award’ (RM1,500) and ‘Best Project Award’ (RM3,000), bringing home with them a total cash prize of RM4,500.

Mohd Sharafat Shah, a Final Year FSKTM student who led the group, said their featured project ‘Qtime’ was an innovative ‘Queue Management System’ turned into a system based on a web and mobile application.

“Our main objective is to reduce waiting time for customers. They will be notified when their turn come via a message which is sent through their smartphone.

“Qtime is a mobile application which functions as a waiting time management system (QMS). This system will provide an estimate of the time customers have to wait, right from the moment they get their ticketing number to the time they are called to the counter,” he said.

FSKTM Senior Lecturer of the Multimedia Department, Dr. Hizmawati Madzin said the programme will enhance students’ skills in the fields of entrepreneurship, creation and technology through innovation and creativity in developing relevant technologies to suit with present time.

“It is hoped that programmes such as this will draw the involvement of more UPM students besides enabling us to cope with future demand for young technopreneurs who specialized in the field of internet and mobile application ,” he said.

The programme was held with the collaboration of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Global Startup Lab, USA, Malaysia Education Ministry and Talent Division of the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) for seven weeks at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) from June 29 till August 14. -  UPM
