Cerebral palsy is not a hindrance to get a doctoral degree

By Cheng Kai Wah

SERDANG, Nov 17 – Physical limitations since childhood did not hinder Dr. Mastura Mahamed, 34, from the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK) to complete her studies and receive a doctor of philosophy degree in mass communication at the 43rd Convocation Ceremony, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) today.

“I think the most important factor to succeed is the ability to manage time and have high self-discipline.

“I am not able to move fast like others due to cerebral palsy. Therefore, I get up at 4 am every day to do physiotherapy and get ready to go to work,” said Dr. Mastura.

During her 3 years and 8 months doctoral studies, Dr. Mastura has had to face various challenges such as the perception of others and facilities at her workplace that are not very disabled friendly.

“I truly appreciate students who are willing to help me in the faculty. I also thank the support of close friends, the faculty and the university management. They contributed to the strong personality that I own today,” said Dr. Mastura.

Dr. Mastura wants to set an example to the public that self-confidence leads to success. Dr. Mastura has also not failed in advising her students to cultivate patience, perseverance and positive thinking. She has also urged them not to look for excuses to escape life’s problems.

Dr. Mastura is currently serving as a senior lecturer at the Department of Communication, FBMK UPM. - UPM
