SERDANG, Nov 9 - Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) launched a Fabric Recycling programme to foster fabric recycling culture among UPM students and staff.

UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dato' Dr. Aini Ideris said that the recycling programme was able to be implemented due to the cooperation from all the different levels and layers of organisations in UPM.

"The establishment of a well-organised dedicated organisation at each Centre of Responsibility will enable all the profits gained from the sales of recyclable products to be used and channelled for the needs and welfare of the officers, students and Centre of Responsibility at UPM," she said.

According to her, the establishment of a scheduled and organised collection and delivery system to handle recycling products and the cooperation of all parties in UPM play a role in the success of the activity.

"The establishment of a scheduled and organised collection and delivery system in the handling of recycling products should be streamlined to facilitate UPM staff in channelling recyclable products and generate revenue for the faculty,” she said.

Meanwhile, Kloth Malaysia has supplied 10 fabric recycling bins in UPM campus, and the event was officiated by Professor Datin Paduka Dato’ Dr. Aini at RedCube, Biology Department, Faculty of Science UPM.

The Fabric Recycling Programme is an activity planned by the Main Secretariat of Recycling@U in conjunction with the UPM Environment Week 2018 programme. It is an effort to realise the commitment of UPM in maintaining a Green Campus status.

Following the programme, the Main Secretariat of Recycling@U has extended its collaboration of network with Kloth Malaysia to promote the practice of fabric recycling.

Prior to that, in 2012, UPM collaborated with the Coca Cola company and launched a recycling practice campaign among UPM students and staff. It began with the R2C programme which focused on the practice of recycling plastic bottles and beverage cans.

UPM earned the trust of Coca Cola which led to the establishment of the Recycling@U Programme in 2017 with four local public universities, namely, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia in which the focus was increased to include other recycling products such as plastic, paper and 'e-waste'. - UPM
