SERDANG, Nov 26– Around 200 participants from various government bodies which include the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, the Agriculture Department, MARDI and RISDA, private and corporate sectors as well as the public and private universities participated in the High Value Farming Seminar 2018, here in UPM.

The two-day seminar was officiated by the Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Dato’ Salahuddin Ayub.

The seminar was organised by UPM Alumni Association (PAUPM) in collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), National Association of Smallholders Malaysia (NASH) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry.

In his speech, Dato’ Salahuddin said the value of agriculture lies in its ability to maximise the value of land assets or agricultural land.

According to him, this is done by utilising modern technology, overcoming shortage of labour and increasing the value of freshly processed farm yield in order to increase farmers’ income.

Meanwhile, UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dato' Dr. Aini Ideris said that UPM campus in Serdang is perceived as the home of origin for agricultural education in this country.

“With regard to agriculture, the main issues of concern that surround the Malaysian agriculture today are ensuring food security for the nation through parallel efforts to sustain and increase exports of agricultural produce,” she said.

She added that the ability to produce sufficient food for the world’s population depends on agro-modern technology and entrepreneurship.

PAUPM President, Dato’ Seri DiRaja Syed Razlan Jamalullail said that the objective of the seminar is to find ways of utilising idle land or split idle land of smaller size in order to produce high value crops.

PAUPM President, Dato’ Seri DiRaja Syed Razlan Jamalullail said that the seminar attempts to analyse issues related to the production of high value crops on idle land or land which is divided and thus becomes smaller in measurement.

Twelve paperwork were presented in the seminar. - UPM
