SERDANG, March 20 – Higher Education Minister Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh launched a new course, Bachelor of Science in Farming Management (BSPP), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) that entailed two years of learning in university and another two years of industrial attachment (2u2i) in conjunction with UPM’s Agriculture Faculty’s Open Day.

Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh said UPM’s Faculty of Agriculture played a significant role in producing agro graduates who could enhance agricultural technologies and improve the living condition of the farming community in the country.

”It is a leading university that offers quality study programmes at both degree and post-graduate programmes in the field of agriculture.”

”The development of BSPP programme is in line with manpower requirements in the oil palm industry, which is one of the 12 National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs) that contributes significantly towards national economy.

”The role by FP is not only to educate children to become successful agricultural graduates but also to ensure that food security and supply of food in our country remain adequate for the people all the time,” he said.

The new program is in addition to the five existing programs at Bachelor’s level offered by the Faculty of Agriculture, namely Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Bachelor of Science in Horticulture, Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness, Bachelor of Agriculture (Aquaculture) and Bachelor of Agriculture (Animal Sciences).

The programme is offered based on demand by the plantation sector that needs many plantation executives to replace staff who have either retired or resigned as well as the need to explore new ventures.

UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris said FP has developed a wide range of infrastructure and facilities and boasts of instructors who are able to offer superior quality of learning at degree and post-graduates’ studies in agriculture.

"The role of FP is not only to educate graduates to become successful in all aspects but also to ensure that food security could guarantee sufficient supply of food for the country,” she said.

Under this 2u2i programme, students will study for four semesters at UPM and another four semesters in the relevant industries. They will learn about the overall farm management aspects, starting from the fifth semester until they are in the eighth semester.

During industrial attachments, they will be exposed to hands-on aspects of farm management, including land clearing methods of eco-friendly farmings, crop management and managment of human resources.

Also held  at the event were signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UPM and ISPM and The Holstein Milk Sdn. Bhd. and signing of documents of Acceptance of Proposed Certification of Agriculture Programme between AgroBank-UPM in realizing the objectives of the study program.

Agrobank-UPM (UPM Agriculture Agrobank-Certification Program) is, indeed, a recognition for UPM. Under this programme, Agrobank officers will be trained to improve their knowledge competency in the field of agriculture.

ISPM acts as an advisor for UPM in the implementation of curriculum, types of courses, and instructional delivery methods that are relevant to industrial requirements.

Meanwhile, under the MoU between UPM and The Holstein Milk Sdn. Bhd, students will be given the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the management of dairy product, with the facilities provided by The Holstein Milk Sdn. Bhd.

Other activities held from March 19 to March 20 were Farm Run 2017, exhibition study programme, Development of Agriculture clinic, career talks, visits to the Organic Farm and Home Farm City, and sale of agricultural produce and products.
