SERDANG, Nov 7 – Six-years of watching  graduates on wheelchairs receive their degrees during convocations inspired a security assistant in Universiti Putra Malaysia to pursue his undergraduate studies.

Rizan Kabul, 40, finally received his bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Development from UPM’s Faculty of Education during the university’s 41st Convocation after studying on a part-time basis (long-distance learning) for four and a half years.

"For the past six years, every time I was on duty at the convocation, I yearned to continue my studies. I was especially overwhelmed by the fact that many wheelchair-bound graduates were able to succeed in their studies.

"If those with disabilities can do it, why can’t us the fully-abled learn part-time?" he who has worked in UPM for 10 years said.

The father of three, from Kudat, Sabah, received a Diploma in Computer Science from UPM in 2005 and has been serving in UPM from 2007 till now.

He said despite receiving support from his superior to continue his studies, the challenges of studying long distance (PJJ) is still arduous such as when he had had to skip classes if a replacement was not found for his work shift or when his final year project paper was rejected.
