SERDANG, Feb 11  – The Institute of Plantation Studies of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has organized a Putra Plantation Forum Series 1 to provide more information and knowledge on sustainability of the palm oil plantations in Malaysia.

UPM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Mohd Lila said the forum, the first time to be held, was aimed at  ensuring sustainability in the palm oil industry and to serve as a platform for university students to keep themselves abreast with developments in the industry.

“This forum is an important platform for individuals, government bodies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to share their views on the status of plantations in Malaysia, in particular those relating to the palm oil industry,” he said.

He added that the forum will enable universities, members of the public and those who are directly involved in plantations to form strategic partnerships in their efforts to develop a sustainable industry.

“Our country is an important producer of palm oil commodity in the world and the commodity is our country’s economic booster. The production of the commodity will be sustainable provided sufficient emphasis is given on the plantation industry which will then contribute towards the development of the economy and rural community,” he said.

UPM Director of Institute of Plantation Studies, Prof.Dr. Mohd Khanif Yusop, meanwhile, said the forum series would be continued from time to time, with prominent personalities in the local and international plantation industry to be invited as speakers.
“This is aimed at making UPM to be involved in developing the national plantation industry through its involvement in research, study programmes that are offered to students and consultancy service in related fields as well as to contribute its expertise in the fields of agriculture and plantation,” he said.

The forum, entitled ‘The Paradox of Oil Palm Sustainability’ was presented by Chief Executive Officer of Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), Tan Sri Dr. Yusof Basiron, who is a prominent personality with wide experience in the local and global plantation industry.

He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Bank Negara Malaysia, Central Board Of Irrigation and Power CBIP (Milling) and  Sime Darby Berhad. He is formerly the Director-General of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB). – UPM.
