Selangor Sultan presents excellence awards to 18 outstanding personalities

SERDANG, May 5 - Eighteen Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) academic experts who displayed excellence in their performances, contributions and potentials, received the Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship awards which were presented by Selangor Sultan, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is also UPM Chancellor, at a grand Putra Academia Excellence Event (MGAP) 2015 held here.

MGAP takes the form of appreciation and recognition awarded by the university to its staff who display outstanding research efforts, knowledge development as well as educational services that could enhance the acculturation of excellence in knowledge.

This year also witnessed the presentation of Putra Academia Special Award to an individual who has contributed towards the advancement of knowledge and areas of expertise in line with the vision and mission of the university. The award recipient was  Y.M. Prof. Dr. Tengku Aizan Tengku Abdul Hamid of the Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing /Faculty of Human Ecology.

Four people received the Vice Chancellor Fellowship Award - Teaching. They were Dr. Maria Chong Abdullah from the Faculty of Educational Studies (Outstanding Instructor Category); Dr. Gayathri Thevi Selvarajah of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Young Instructor Category, Pure Science and Health Cluster); Dr Salmah Jan Noor Muhammad from the Faculty of Modern Language and Communication (Young Instructor Category, Arts and Social Sciences Cluster); and Dr. Rahimah Jamaluddin from the Faculty of Educational Studies (Young Instructor Category, Cluster of Applied Arts and Applied Social Sciences).

Eight people received the Vice Chancellor Fellowship Award - Research and Innovation. They were Prof. Dr. Robiah Yunus from Institute of Advance Technology/Faculty of Engineering (under the category of Outstanding Researcher, Science and Technological Cluster); Dr. Mohd Yusof Saari from the Faculty of Economics and Management who received two awards (Outstanding Researcher, Social Science Cluster and the other category - Journals Publishing of the Social Science Cluster).

Dr. Sarva Mangala Praveena from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (Young Researcher Category, Science and Technology Cluster); Dr. Moniza Waheed from Faculty of Modern Language and Communication under the category of Young Researcher of the Social Science Cluster; Dr. Abdul Azis Ariffin from Institute of Advance Technology (Innovation and Product Commercialization Category);  Dr. Shamshuddin Jusop from Faculty of Agriculture (Publishing of Journals, Science and Technology Cluster).

Prof Dr. Abdul Mua’ti @ Zamri Ahmad from Faculty of Modern Language and Communication (Book Publication Category); and Mohd Nasir Baharuddin from the Faculty of Design and Architecture (Arts and Creativity Category).

Two received the Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship under Professional Services. They were Prof. Dr. Laily Paim from the Faculty of Human Ecology (Management and Professional-Academic Group Category) and Razali Othman from Faculty of Food Science and Technology  (under the category of Group Implementers).

Three received the Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship under Outstanding Consultants. They were Dr. Fadzilah Abd. Rahman from the Faculty of Educational Studies; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hazandy Abdul Hamid from the Institute of Tropical Forests and Forest Products/Faculty of Forestry, and Dr. Mohd Zafri Hassan of the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Science from UPM’s Bintulu campus.



Speaking at the occasion, UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris who  expressed her appreciation and congratulations to all award recipients, said she hoped that they could inspire other UPM residents to continue to excel.

She said MGAP which started eight years ago, is the university’s annual program which supports the noble effort by the Education Ministry and government in producing individuals and experts of distinction.

At the function, His Royal Highness Tuanku Chancellor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah consented to launching four books entitled Malay Culinary Herbs, Glorious Landscape Plants in Selangor, Magnificent Forest Trees in Selangor, and Fruit Splendour of Selangor.  – UPM
