Serdang, March 22 (UPM) - School of Graduate Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in collaboration with graduate students from UPM International Students Association (UPMISA) had organized a special tree-planting programme called Putra Sarjana 2014 to provide exposure in conserving the environment through an opening of a mango grove.

Graduate School Dean, Prof. Dr. Bujang Kim Huat, said the grove is aimed at providing education to new graduate students about the importance of conserving the environment for future generations.

"Putra Sarjana tree-planting programme is one of the many efforts to promote green campus and provide exposure to UPM postgraduate students on the importance of enhancing green environment to ensure its sustainability for future generations," he said during the opening ceremony of Putra Sarjana 2014 tree-planting programme here.

He added that the programme is a continuation of earlier initiative by Student Affairs and Alumni (HEPA) Division with the launch of its Green Campus Campaign which promotes the use of bicycles and biodegradable materials in the university.

"The involvement of UPM Students Representative Council (MPP), International Students Association (UPMISA) in collaboration with Student Affairs Division and University Agriculture Park in this programme, is in line with the recognition received by UPM as among the world’s top 50 universities in the field of agriculture and forestry," he said.

Also present at the event were the Ambassador of Fiji, Meli Bainimarama, Ambassador of Sudan, Khalid Abdel Gadir Shukri and a representative from Nigerian Embassy, Makwe S. Victor.

The open area adjacent to the UPM main entrance or Anjung Putra where a total of 22 clones of mango trees were planted is now known as 'UPM International Mango Grove'.

Among those 22 species of local mangoes are Alimali, Apple, Bahagia Bombay Green, Chok Anan, Emelie, Epal Merah, Harumanis, Kalamel, Kuini, Lebai Dollah, Madu, Malgoa, Manalagi, Mangga Telur, Merbok, Nam Dok Mai, Taiwan, Udang, YTM Bulat and YTM Pajang.

This area will directly help to improve UPM image as a university that values ​​the presence of international students in order to increase the number of international students’ enrolment in the future. - UPM
