Street Dakwah approaches the homeless

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 - The Huffaz Club of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organised the Street Dakwah with Huffaz Empowerment Respected Society (HERO) programme to approach the homeless society around Masjid Jamek, Kuala Lumpur. It was the first time the club held such an activity.

44 participants from various institutions of higher learning including UPM, International Islamic University (UIA), Universiti Malaysia (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) took part in the programme.

Several special slots were conducted with the community including ‘Street Dakwah’ which exposed participants to the methods of sharing current and social issues with the community using an amicable approach.

Participants interviewed the local community and recited several verses from the Quran. Another special slot was led by the Youth of Strength & Happiness (YOSH) who shared their experiences and gave some ideas on ways to approach the homeless.

Participants were also given the opportunity to spend time with the homeless based on the concept of “Kita Sapa, Kita Duduk, Kita Faham” (We Greet, We Sit Down, We Understand).

A participant of the programme, Nur Hikmah Hanis, expressed her support for the efforts made by the Huffaz Club, UPM in providing knowledge to the homeless.

"The programme tests my courage as I have to be brave in getting along and spreading goodness to the surrounding community using the Quranic approach," she said.

The organisation of the Street Dakwah programme benefited all participants as it helped shape them into becoming professional huffaz who not only able to memorise the Quran, but also capable of passing the knowledge of the Quran to others, apart from acting as agents of change for themselves and the surrounding community in pursuit of success in life and in the hereafter.

In addition, empowering the youth with the Quran is a very important issue to be addressed in an effort to develop human capital that acts and practices according to the teaching of the Quran in their daily lives.

As such, the Huffaz Club, UPM took the initiative to revive the memorisation of the Quran in UPM which focused on producing professional huffaz who are recognised internationally.

The Huffaz Club, UPM was launched on May 30, 2019 by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International), UPM, Prof. Dr. Mohd Iqbal Saripan. - UPM
