UPM celebrates Manila SEA Games athletes

SERDANG – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) celebrated 36 athletes who represented Malaysia at the 2019 Manila SEA Games as a symbol of appreciation to the athletes who are also UPM students for honoring the name of the country and the university.

UPM athletes contributed five gold, three silver and four bronze medals from the overall achievement of the national contingent which was 55 gold, 58 silver and 71 bronze medals in the biennial sports event.

UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Setia Dato’ Dr. Aini Ideris, said the achievements of UPM athletes who represented the country at the games were great.

In addition, UPM athletes had recorded many triumphs throughout 2019, including being the runner-up at the MASUM Sports Carnival at Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and as champions at both the Super 8 Rugby and the Selangor Hockey League.

UPM taekwondo athletes won bronze at the World University Championship in Naples, Italy, while the sepak takraw athletes won bronze at the International Beach Sepak Takraw Championship in China.

Meanwhile, nine UPM athletes received the Gold Medal Award with an incentive of RM700. The recipients were An Najwa Azizan (Netball), Norashikin Kamalzaman (Netball), Siti Nor Farhana Mustafa (Netball), Karishma a/p Loganathan (Netball), Yap Sean Yee (High Jump), Muhammad Hakimi Ismail (Triple Jump), Ellya Syahirah Ellias (Indoor Hockey), Wan Norfaiezah Md Sajuti (Indoor Hockey) and Muhammad Najmi Farizal Jazlan (Indoor Hockey).

The Silver Medal Award with an incentive of RM500 was awarded to seven athletes. The recipients were Muhammad Ameer Hasrun Zulkefli (Rugby), Muhamad Firdaus Tarmizi (Rugby), Muhammad Dzafran Asyraaf Muhamad Zainuddin (Rugby), Wan Izzuddin Ismail (Rugby), Muhammad Azwan Zuwairi Mat Zizi (Rugby), Andre Anura Anuar (Long Jump) and Fakrul Adam Fauzi (Kurash).

The Bronze Medal Award with an incentive of RM300 was awarded to Rachel Yeoh Li (Gymnastics), Johathan Nyepa (Athletics), Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli (Athletics), Queenie Ting Kung Ni (Discus Throw) and Nur Afisa Abdul Halil (Archery) – UPM.
