UPM-CUCKOO International collaborates on water quality research

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 June - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) signed a Collaboration Agreement with CUCKOO International in the ‘H2O Industrial Centre of Excellence’ (HO ICOE) project.

The H2O ICOE project will be implemented in three phases over a five year period with the goal of establishing the Industrial National Reference Centre.

The Reference Centre will serve as a benchmark for water quality so that both the industry and community have access to clean water.

UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dato’ Dr. Aini Ideris said the signing of the collaboration marks a significant milestone in research collaboration closer to academicians and the industry.

She said that the success of UPM-CUCKOO relationship also involved the exchange of Offer Letter and Acceptance Letter involving researchers from the Faculty of Environmental Studies, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences with Cuckoo International towards the setting up of the ICOE Project on Water.

She also expressed joy in witnessing commitment of all parties in establishing cooperation and closer ties to leverage on the strengths of one another in spearheading translation research in water filtration ecosystems.

“I am confident that this partnership will drive a new wave of world-class developments in the portable water filtration sector,” she said.

Besides that, there are plans to set up Water Museum and Water Experience Centre which will provide case studies as well as information to raise public awareness on the importance of quality healthy water.

The research will be carried out by a group of experts from various faculties under the leadership of the Dean of Faculty of Environmental Studies, Profesor Dr. Ahmad Zaharin Aris, a specialist in the research of Hydrochemical, Water Quality Chemical and Environmental Forensic Studies.

Chief Executive Officer of CUCKOO International, Hoe Kian Choon said that the investment of RM10 million in the project reflets its potential and the vision to change the landscape of water treatment industry in Malaysia to produce products locally befitting consumer needs.

The agreement was made by Prof. Datin Paduka Dato’ Dr. Aini on behalf of UPM while Hoe on behalf of CUCKOO International.

The event was witnessed by Chief Executive Officer of Invest Selangor, Dato’ Hasan Azhari and Deputy Vice Chancellor, Industry and Community Network (UPM), Prof. Dato’ Dr.-Ing Ir. Renuganth Varatharajoo. - UPM
