UPM food science team wins gold at IFTSA

LAS VEGAS, 28 June – A team of postgraduate students from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) comprisingf six students, Sew Chang Chew (Leader), Najla Gooda Sahib, Tan Tai Boon, Lasekan Adeseye O., Kuan Chee Hao and Mohd Asraf Mohd Zainudin from the Faculty of Food Science and Technology struck gold at the Developing Solutions for Developing Countries competition organised by the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA) which took place from 25-28 June 2012 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada USA.

The team which received guidance and coaching from Prof. Dr. Son Radu, who is a lecturer and also Deputy Dean (Postgraduate, Research and Innovation) of the Faculty of Food Science and Technology, UPM put presented their product known as Vit-A-Go – Reducing the Rate of Vitamin A Deficiency Among Kenyan Kids Using Mango Leather. It is hoped that Vit-A-Go, a simple but delicious mango leather packed with Vitamin A and made from bruised or overripe mangoes will help  overcome Vitamin A deficiency among Kenyan children.

During a screening process held in February 2012, the team was also one of the finalists,  winning first place among 40 competing teams. Two other finalists teams were from Universiti Pertanian Bogor and Universiti Brawijaya, both from Indonesia.

The UPM team won airline tickets from the office of the deputy vice chancellor  (Student Affairs and International), a Travel Grant  from the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association and other expenditure from the Research and Innovations and Promotions Division, Putra Science Park. Additionally, the winners received a sponsorship of up to RM1000 from the Malaysian Institute of Food Technology.
