SERDANG, 8 March (UPM) – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) of Japan (Kyutech) have inked a pact  for the Japanese institute to set up a satellite campus in UPM.

The Malaysia Super Satellite Campus (MSSM) in UPM is the first Japanese campus in Malaysia and Southeast Asia that is also a symbol of the close ties between the two nations in the field of education and research.

Kyutech president, Dr. Morio Matsunaga said the satellite campus was not only a symbol of the friendship between the two nations but was also the symbol of confidence of Malaysia in Japanese technology and work culture.

The selection of UPM for the campus was the most apt for the objective of Kyutech to step up cooperation in research with Malaysia and the other countries in the region.

“I hope the cooperation would produce a new generation of engineers who are highly skilled and innovative in both countries so that they can contribute to the advancement of their respective nations,” he said after signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the setting of the Kyutech satellite campus here on 21 February.

The UPM-Kyutech MoU was signed by UPM Vice Chancellor Datuk Dr. Mohd Fauzi Ramlan and Dr. Morio Matsunaga. It was witnessed by Minister of Higher Education Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and the Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia, Mr Shigeru Nakamura.

The Dean of the Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences Faculty of UPM, Prof. Dr Mohd Ali Hassan, said the cooperation involved the exchange of students and staffs, collaboration in research projects, exchange of publications, reports and academic information and professional development.

“The establishment of MSSM is a result of our cooperation in education and research that offers twin UPM-Kyutech degrees programmes.

“The students will study in UPM and Kyutech. In the first phase, UPM students will study here from April before continuing in Kyutech in Japan in September this year.

“These students wil also earn two degrees, one from UPM and one from Kyutech ,” he said.

“Priority would be given to students going for engineering, computer science, medicine and biotechnology,” said Prof. Dr. Mohd Ali.

UPM’s cooperation with Kyutech was started by the Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences Faculty on 4th February 2002 when they collaborated to develop a zero-discharge system for the oil palm mills in Sandakan and the Sungai Kinabatangan region.

The green concept project in Sandakan was to have a better and safer oil palm waste disposal system without toxins, while ensuring quality air that is free from pollution. The four-phase project covered biogas for power, biodiesel for fuel, and biocompost for fertilizer. – UPM
