Serdang, June 21 - For the second time, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) co-organized the Healthy Life Cycling Programme around the university area.

The programme attracted over 100 participants among UPM students, staff, cycling club members and family.

Programme director, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Ismail, said the programme was initiated to inspire the public to foster the culture of healthy lifestyle through cycling.

"UPM strives to enhance the cycling ecosystem on campus by building 5km bicycle lane and roofed walkway to reduce the use of buses, motorcycles and cars among students.

"The awareness is also nurturing a passion for protecting the environment, health and alleviate traffic congestion through cycling," he said.

Last year, he took steps to start a project called Recycle to Cycle with students from Faculty of Science, UPM to make the campus a cycling zone and encourage a more active and healthy lifestyle.

Meanwhile, MPSJ Corporate Deputy Director, Muhamad Miswan said, the programme was aimed at adopting a healthy lifestyle among community members, and at the same time improving the relationship between the public and MPSJ.

The leisurely cycling programme was divided into two categories; 5km family category, and 10km open category for participants aged 15 years and above.

UPM and MPSJ also provided 40 bicycles and helmets that have safety features to participants who did not have bicycles and 50 lucky draw prizes.
