UPM Organizes 2016 Pacific Asian Communication Association Convention

SERDANG, July 21 – The Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK), Faculty of Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has organized the 11th Pacific and Asia Communication Association Convention (PACA).

The four-day convention, themed ‘Future Paradigm of Asia: Culture, Communication and Integration' was attended by some 200 lecturers and students from Asean member countries, United States of America and South Korea.

In his speech at the event, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called on the people to use the social media as a platform for healthy dialogues and dissemination of accurate information.

He also said social media and internet users should be more careful and pay attention to any news spread by ensuring the authenticity of each news before sharing it on the social media.

“Inaccurate news or information can create panic among the public. In order to maintain peace amidst the country’s cultural diversity, the social media should be used as the platform to facilitate exchange of dialogues and accurate information between users but it must not be divisive in nature or upload status that contains defamatory,” he said.

His speech text was read by Minister of Communication and Multimedia, Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak at the opening of the convention.



Meanwhile, Dean of Faculty, Prof. Dr. Mua'ti @ Zamri Ahmad said the organization of the convention was to create a platform for academics and practitioners to share current trends and issues in communication, especially communication studies in Asian region, which have yet to be given due recognition.

"Often, views from the region is hardly heard by the global research community. Attention and recognition from scholars, practitioners and activists in Asia and Pacific are, indeed, needed in view of the rapidly changing regional socio-politics and economic landscapes,” he said.

Set up on March 1, 1995, PACA is responsible, among others, in promoting Asia-centric intercultural communication studies. - UPM
