UPM programme to woo MRSM students to opt for a science career

SERDANG, Aug 22  (UPM) – A total of 142 Form Four students from 42 MARA Junior Science Colleges (MRSM) nationwide have been given exposure in the field of science and scientific research so that they will choose for a career in these fields.

The four-day exposure under the Nobel Laureate Outreach Programme (NLOC) organized by the Faculty of Science of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in collaboration with the Secondary Education Division of  Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) aims to imbue the MRSM students with the research elements to develop their personal potentials.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industrial and Community Relations), Prof. Dr. Ir. Renuganth Varatharajoo said research-based learning and individualized learning could produce the country's potential scientists of international standard in future.

“This can create interest on the research culture among  students through a question and answer session to enhance their performance through scientific excellence ,” he said at the closing session of the programme, here today.

He said the NLOC programme could also promote the Agro-Science Foundation Centre (rapid route programme), Faculty of Forestry and Faculty of Environmental Study, UPM.

The programme, held for the second time, was in line with the objective of UPM to boost the involvement of the community in the generation and sharing of knowledge.

The students were guided by lecturers and facilitators from the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Forestry and the Faculty of Environmental Study to undertake research in the laboratory, data analysis, discussions and prepare activity reports.

Also present at the event were the MARA Director-General, Datuk Ibrahim Ahmad; Dean of the Science Faculty, Prof. Dr. Zainal Abidin Talib; Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Datin Dr. Faridah Hanum Ibrahim and the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Study, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ramdzani Abdullah. – UPM
