SERDANG, 21st Jan – The Institute of Bioscience (IBS) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has received a research grant of RM2mil from the Olympus Corporation (Olympus) to develop research on an advanced Live Cell Imaging Suite.

The location of the advanced imaging system, also enables research on vaccine and therapeutic development as well as cancer and cell stems to be carried out in UPM.

The two-year collaboration with Olympus also includes equipment maintenance and an allocated full time expert.

UPM’s Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Prof. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Mohd Saleh Jaafar said the collaboration would benefit both parties in terms of research and development in the field of life sciences.

“The initial UPM-Olympus research collaboration will open doors to local scientists to work on Live Cell Imaging technology.

“With the expertise we have and strong support from Olympus, I’m confident that UPM will be able to be the leading research centre for bio imaging in the near future,” he said in his speech at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UPM and Olympus held here.

Olympus Managing Director of the Asia Pacific Region, Kazuhiro Watanabe said they selected UPM as they are impressed with UPM’s research quality, which is globally reputable.

“UPM has high tech lab facilities and is strategically sited as one of the research development centres in the Asian region,” he said.

Apart from UPM, Olympus has placed a similar system at the Institute of Medical Biology (IMB), Singapore and at the Faculty Of Science, Mahidol University, Thailand.

UPM’s IBS will organize basic and advanced courses on life cell imaging for postgraduate students and UPM’s researchers as well as those from other local institutions, with the aim of extending the application of life cell imaging in research.
