KAJANG, Nov 22 – Safe Kids Malaysia of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), with the cooperation of Road Safety Department (JKJR) Malaysia, gave away 40 free safety helmets to pupils of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Kajang, Selangor, to encourage the use of helmets among schoolchildren

UPM Safe Kids Malaysia Executive Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kulanthayan KC Mani said the objective of the programme was to instill awareness, particularly among parents, the importance of using proper helmets for their children.

"A motorcycle safety helmet is capable of reducing the risks and level of injuries by 72%, and reducing the probability of death up to 39%. As many as 37% of children are using helmets used by adult persons, 24% are using toy helmets and the remaining not using helmets at all,” he said.

He said the helmets with SIRIM label and certification were also sponsored by Safe Kids Worldwide USA and Halliburton Charitable Foundation.

“A research that I have conducted found that only 3% of children used that Sirim-label helmets, and 97% percent did not get that full protection when they were on motorcycles,” he added.

Among the activities carried out during the program were a demonstration on the use of helmets by Selangor JKJR Director, Mohammad Fakhri Mansor.

Meanwhile, UPM FPSK Safe Kids Malaysia and JKJR Malaysia aimed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3.6 under the United Nations (UN) that targeted a reduction of 50% in road fatalities by 2020 and SGD 11.2 that touched on road safety improvements for children by the year 2030. - UPM
