UPM wins 2 Gold and 3 Special Awards at INOVA

ZAGREB – A team of researchers from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rosnah Shamsuddin along with her apprentice Muhammad Fakhri Zainuddin managed to bag two gold medals and three special awards.

They had won the Diploma Euroinvent Gold Medal from Romania Inventor Forum and Honor of Invention from World Invention Intellectual Property Association (WIIPA) Awards at the International Invention Show (INOVA) here.

Dr. Rosnah, a lecturer from Department of Food & Process Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, with her invention, Ultraviolet (UV) Pasteurizer Machine, an apparatus that treats tropical fruit juice using the ultraviolet light to simultaneously deactivate bacteria and preserve the content of vitamin C in the juice.



Her second product, White Pepper Decorticator (WPD), is a peeling machine that had been contrived to expedite the speed in producing white paper through the immersion process and it only takes 5 days to complete compared to the current mechanism, which takes 14 days.

Rosnah also won the bronze and emerged to be the recipient of an award from Qatar, Agri Green Special Award, for her product, Whole Pineapple Plant Waste Products as Potential Feed for Cattles, an innovation to produce pellet feed for feedlot cattle made from biodegradable materials such as leaves and pineapple stems waste through extrusion and compression process.

Besides Rosnah, another UPM researcher, Dr. Asnor Juraiza Dato’ Ishak from Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, along with her mentee, Badrul Hisham Abu Bakar arose to nab a silver medal for a device which is portable, user-friendly and affordable called SMART Fruit Grader, used for the purpose of weighing and grading fruits based on specifications prescribed by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA).

A total of 32 countries, 600 products competed in the open and young researchers categories at the INOVA on 12 to 17 November here, where UPM products appeared to gain the attention of the Croatian President, Ivo Josipovic.

Also present at the event was Dato' Yean Yoke Heng, the Malaysian Ambassador to Croatia.
