UPM wins 41 gold, 19 silver and 21 bronze medals at SUKIPT 2016

SKUDAI, Feb 5 - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) contingent took home 41 gold, 19 silver and 21 bronze medals, placing it as the second overall winner at the Higher Learning Institutions Sports Championship (SUKIPT) 2016.

A total of 117 contingents, including several teams from ASEAN member countries, took part in the third edition of the championship which started from January 25 to February 5 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) here.

Athletics contributed to the highest number of gold medals won by UPM at 16, followed by archery (five), fencing (three), judo (three), karate (three), tenpin bowling (two), taekwondo (two), hockey (two) and one each from netball, rugby, sepaktakraw, chess and squash.

The gold medals in athletics were won by Mohamad Alif Hanif Mohd Afandi (Men’s shot put), Yap Sean Yee (women’s high jump), Chuah Yu Tian (women’s pole vault), Pua Ling En (women’s 5000 meter walk), Muhd Ajmal Aiman Mat Hasan (men’s 110 meter hurdles), Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli  (women’s 100 meter), Anchois Aron (men’s 400 meter).

Muhamad Khairil Harith Harun (men’s 10000 meter walk), Bibi Nuraishah Ishak (women’s shot put), men’s 4x100 meter relay, Muhammad Hakimi (men’s triple jump), Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli (women’s 200 meter), Ahmad Luth Hamizan (men’s 3000 meter Steeple Chase) and men’s and women’s 4x400 relays.

The gold medals from archery came from Nur AtiqahAzizi, Fairuz SM Rahim, women Recurve team, women Compound team and mixed Compound team.

Three gold for fencing were won by Nadzirah Mohd Adzeman (Epee women’s individual), Muhammad Aqil Anuar (Men’s Foil), and Natasha Ezzra Abu Bakar (women’s Foil).

In judo, the gold came from Muhamad Jafaraannuar Jamaludin (Men’s under 55kg), Muhamad Ruzaini Abdul Razak (Men’s Over 100 kg), and Chong Wei Fu (Men’s Below 66 kg).

Karate contributed three gold medals which came from Teagarajan Kunasakaran in individual Kumite (men’s below 84 kg), Devaraj Venkatesan in individual kumite (men’s over 84 kg), and Shree Sharmini Segaran in individual Kumite (women’s below 68kg).

Tenpin Bowling’s two gold medals were won by Siti Aishatun Hussin in women’s individual category and women’s doubles through the combination of Siti Aishatun and Radin Nur Najwa Radin Dzulfakar.

Taekwondo gave two gold through men’s batam and men’s fly events.

UPM also emerged champions in both men’s and women’s hockey while its rugby team also brought home a gold medal. Victory also went to UPM’s sepaktakraw and its netball teams.

The gold medal for chess was contributed by Law Tze Hong in the men’s event while Yuen Chee Wern won gold in the men’s squash. – UPM.
