UPM wins Tan Sri Dr. Ali Hamsa’s Chair award

SERDANG, May 25 – For the first time, Universiti Pura Malaysia (UPM) won the Tan Sri Dr. Ali Hamsa’s Chair Award, walking away with a certificate and a grant of   RM300,000 for a three-year period.

Under a Green Campus Sustainability Special Award category, six public universities received RM20,000 cash each and a certificate. Among them were Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

Under active participation, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM), Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMap), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UNISZA), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) each received cash of RM2,000 and a certificate.

The awards were presented by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa during a Green Campus Sustainability Convention held at UPM.

 

Speaking at the convention, he said the event served as a platform for university students to submit information and carry out their responsibilities to maintain cleanliness and environmental sustainability.

"The practice of preserving hygiene will lead to environmental sustainability, an important aspect in preparing our young people as the second echelon leaders towards making Malaysia a country that is clean, beautiful and prosperous," he said.

UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris said preservation of green environment has always been emphasized by UPM and it is the university’s responsibility to make it as one of the main agenda of the university.

"UPM is also involved in various researches, with focus on the aspect of green sustainability where UPM staff and students cooperate with the industries, ministries, agencies and the community to continue supporting the country's efforts to preserve the environment," she said.

The Green Campus Sustainability Convention was jointly organized by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government through its agency, Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp). - UPM
