SERDANG, Oct 23: As an educated lot, graduates must always be cautious and responsible for whatever action they take, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UMP) Pro Chancellor, Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek said.

He said this is because they will inherit the future of this country and be responsible in protecting the country’s peace and order as well as continuing with on-going efforts for national progress and development.

He also said knowledgeable graduates with good moral values, behavior, mindset and culture were important in producing noble-hearted Malaysians.

“A graduate must stay true to the knowledge that he has gained. The greater the value of ihsan in a person, the higher the level of integrity as reflected in his behavior and action that he takes,” he said in his speech at the 3rd Session of UPM’s 40th Convocation ceremony, held at Dewan Besar, Pusat Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, UPM, here.

He also reminded graduates to always be appreciative of their parents’ sacrifices in terms of time, energy, financial resources and patience they spent for the former.

“The inspiration that they gave may have allowed graduates to overcome all challenges, pressures and other obstacles while pursuing their studies, making them to be more matured, a better person and successful.

“Indeed, inspiration from families is an important factor in producing an all-rounder,” he added.

In overcoming career challenges, he said, graduates will be facing competition when seeking employment that is suitable with their qualifications and difficulties if they were unable to master the variety of skills required while they were in university.

He added that a degree is a pre-requisite to seek employment but not a guarantee that they could secure a job.

“Graduates actually have no choice but to make early preparations with the required skills in order to be able to face all sorts of challenges while looking for a job,” he said.

He also said they needed to focus on some skills that were pre-requisites by employers such as communication skill, the ability to resolve problems, leadership qualities and management skills.

He said, such skills must be mastered in order for them to be able to overcome challenges when seeking employment. – UPM
