UPM Masters student is recipient of IEEE CAS (M) Masters Dissertation Award 2015

By: Dr. Fakhrul Zaman Rokhani

KUALA LUMPUR – A Master’s student from the Engineering Faculty of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Jaafar Khadair Kadam Al-Frajat, received an IEEE CAS (M) Outstanding Masters Dissertation Award 2015 from IEEE Circuits and Systems Malaysia chapter recently.

He walked away with RM150 cash, a certificate and a year-long membership of IEEE Circuits and Systems, courtesy of IEEE Society – Circuits and Systems Malaysia Chapter.

Lecturer of the Department of Computer and Communication Systems Engineering of the Faculty of  Engineering, UPM, Dr. Fakhrul Zaman Rokhani, who supervised Jaafar Khadair’s Masters thesis, entitled “Cost-Efficient Standard Cell Library Timing and Power Validation” said the thesis was related to an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), widely and commonly used in every electronic gadget.

In ASIC, the standard cell design flow is the most important component as it could influence the speed, use of energy as well as the size of the electronic chip.

Therefore, early verification of the standard cell is compulsory to make sure the designed electronic chips are able to fulfil all  required specifications.

However, the present techniques of process verification could incur a high cost as huge silicon and a longer testing period are required. The thesis highlighted two new techniques using an approach of burden sharing between multiple chains and access control for multi-input gate circuits.

The thesis featured a technique that could afford to reduce the size of the silicon up to 90 percent and the in/out ports of the pads up to 97 percent as against the present method, thus, contributing directly to reduction in the silicon fabrication cost and testing time.

Among supervision committee members involved were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Roslina Mohd Sidek and Dr. Khairulmizam Samsudin.

Meanwhile, the faculty’s PHD student, Dr. Wameedh Nazar Flayyih received an IEEE CAS (M) Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award for the year 2014, in the form of RM200 cash, a certificate and a year-long IEEE Circuits and Systems membership.

His thesis also received a Doctor of Philosophy with distinction award from UPM. The thesis explores a new coding scheme to provide a high level of protection and reduce errors that cause delays in conventional buses for network-on-chip (NoC) in the era of scaled-down technology for semi conductor.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shaiful Jahari Hashim, Dr. Khairulmizam Samsudin and Prof. Yehea Ismail of Egypt’s Zewail City of Science and Technology were among the supervision committee members involved.

Both students were from the System-on-Chip (SoC) research team under UPM Applied Sciences and Engineering research cluster. The list of award recipients can be obtained from IEEE Circuits and Systems Malaysia chapter website. - UPM
