SERDANG – The Industrial Training Unit of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)’s Faculty of Food Science and Technology (FSTM) organized two smart partnership programmes with the Ministry of Health’s Division of Food Safety and Quality (BKKM) recently.

The two programmes - “Kerjasama Pintar MeSTI BKKM-UPM 2016” and “Sustainable Supplier Development Programme (SSDP) di UPM 2016” lasted for six days for each programme.

Kerjasama Pintar MeSTI BKKM-UPM 2016 took the form of a placement service for students at selected small- and medium-sized food enterprises (EKS) with the aim of assisting the industries to create a Jaminan Keselamatan Makanan (PJKM) (Food Safety Assurance) programme, in particular the certification scheme for “Makanan Selamat Tanggungjawab Industri (MeSTI) (Safe food is the Responsibility of the Industry)”, with the cooperation of FSTM lecturers and BKKM officers.

“Sustainable Supplier Development Programme (SSDP) di UPM 2016”, meanwhile, took the form of a strategic partnership arrangement with public and private agencies, supported by the network of supermarkets such as AEON Co., Mydin, Tesco, Giant, AEON Big, and EKS food suppliers that have been supplying food products to those supermarkets.

The objective of SSDP programme is to enhance food safety performance at all food outlets, strengthen trade activities in the local and foreign markets, enhance the capacity of local food technology and promote cooperation between the public and private sectors.
 
Coordinator of Industrial Training, Dr. Maimunah Sanny said basically, both programmes enabled students to act as the medium between BKKM and the industries.
 
“These students are placed at food factories which have been identified nationwide for an industrial training for six months, starting February until August 2016, based on the integrated modules which have been developed.

”The programme helps the faculty to provide industrial training and practical courses in lieu of the faculty’s programmes. Such programme allows the involvement of faculty and students in transforming the food enterprises, especially EKS,” he said.
